Rules for Heel Work and Loose Lead Walking

Lead training mistakes are usually made very early on in the puppy’s life. I have met lots of owners who are inclined to allow the walk to be all about their cute puppy and as a result the puppy is allowed to do what it wants and go where it wants. This sets an owner up to fail at the task of having any control over the lead and the puppy very quickly becomes the leader in the relationship.

The bulk of your lead and collar association should be done in one room of your home with minimal distractions. Don’t expect your puppy to cope with the lead, collar and their first experience outside all in one go.

You must recognise the importance of taking control of the lead and ensuring your puppy sees this time as ‘work’.

•Keep your puppy in place on only one side of you

•Make sure you stop each time your puppy walks out in front of you

•Change direction and keep your puppy focused on you

These are the basics for managing a puppy on a lead. Follow these tips from the very first walk and you will already be sending your puppy a strong message of guidance.
